The Berklee Sessions is out today on CD, digital, and all streaming services. The CD is the culmination of a wonderful collaboration with Robin Rimbaud (aka Scanner), whose artistry I have admired for years. As The Wire Magazine generously wrote: “It hits the kind of open ended all-consuming groove to be found in The Necks, Tortoise or Miles Davis in modal mode: pulsating, circling jazz patterns, bass bubbling through ring modulation and envelope filters, sax and slide guitar, with Rimbaud’s shortwave radio and electronics dusting through the gaps.” Thanks to everyone for your support of independent music!

"Casino degli Angeli"

Presicce-Acquarica, Lecce (LE), Italy

The Casino degli Angeli is a building characterized by remarkable craftsmanship, consisting of an octagonal frescoed main floor, a loggia with balustrades, and a dramatic split staircase. Built in the second half of the 18th century during a flourishing period of agricultural culture in the lower Salento region, the Casino degli Angeli bears witness to progressive changes in the surrounding landscape—from the agricultural conversion of the 18th century to the emergence of a more recent industrial/commercial area—all while maintaining the same preciousness as a fossil.

In continuity with the research that connects performative practices to the submerged potential of particular architectures, studioconcreto has invited the interdisciplinary artist, saxophonist, and composer Neil Leonard to compose a site-specific sound piece. Leonard's composition originates from the study of Turandot, Giacomo Puccini's unfinished opera, and revisits the musical dialogue between the East and the West at the beginning of the 20th century when Puccini altered the sound of European opera by incorporating Asian themes and harmonies.

The composition resonates with the circular form of the architecture and becomes part of a lyrical installation that envelops the audience, where the archaic structure shapes new forms of perception. A fragment taken from a popular Chinese song used in Turandot is expanded over time and performed by five opera singers who, through their voices, create an expanded sonic environment.

Quadraphonic sound installation

Free and open to the public

https://tang.skidmore.edu/exhibitions/484-elevator-music-45-neil-leonard-sonance-for-the-precession

Elevator Music 45: Neil Leonard—Sonance for the Precession presents a quadraphonic sound installation that explores the orbital journeys of our solar system’s planets. The earth’s precession—it spins on an axis and spins around the sun—causes our vantage points of the night sky to subtly shift each moment as it “wobbles” back and forth on its axis every 26,000 years. In this installation, the approximately 60-minute audio, based on alto saxophone recordings and electronic sounds, advances in circular motion around the listener, sonically animating the elevator and encouraging reflection on the variant rates of planetary orbits around the sun and on our ever-changing place in the universe.

Musica Para Danza 2019 is a homage to Juan Blanco’s ground breaking tape composition, Musica Para Danza (1961). Sonance for the Precession is a site-specific sound installation created by artist, musician, and composer Neil Leonard. The electroacoustic composition, played for 30 minutes each day half an hour before sunset, explores ancient ideas connecting the precession, or movement, of the equinox with the harmonic series. The composition provides a context to reflect on how Hindu and Greek theories of astronomy and acoustics developed through intercultural exchange as far back as prehistoric times. The installation was premiered atop the historic Hopkins Observatory situated adjacent to the Williams College Museum of Art in autumn, 2019.
